Neils Heggen
Obituary
transcribed from a newspaper from Jackson County, WI

Neils Heggen of York, former register of deeds of Jackson County,
and for many years a prominent citizen, passed away at the Community
Hospital at Whitehall, on Sunday, September 28, 1930 at the age of 78
years.

Mr. Heggen fell from a scaffolding while working on one of his buildings
in North Dakota, about a year ago. He never fully recovered from the
effects of that accident, and his general health gradually became impaired.
Several weeks ago, he went to the Community Hospital for treatment, but
on account of his advanced years, the treatment was ineffectual, and he
continued to fail until death released him.

The funeral services were held from the home at 1 o'clock, and from the
Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon,
Rev. Christopherson officiating. The services ere attended by a large
concourse of friends from both counties. Interment was made at the
church cemetery.

Mr. Heggen was born at Gausdall, Norway on September 28, 1852,
the son of Ole and Ingeborg (Nelsdatter) Christianson. He came to
America in April, 1870, first locating in this city. Later he moved to a
farm in the town of Northfield, which was then receiving many of those
who became permanent and prosperous settlers. He engaged in farming
and prospered as the years passed.

In the spring on 1890, he was appointed register of deeds of Jackson
County by the late Governor W.D. Hoard, and moved with his family
to this city. He was elected to the office in 1892, and continued in the
service until January, 1895.

Upon the close of his service as register of deeds he returned to his farm
in Northfield. About twenty years ago, he became interested in
North Dakota, and acquired a tract of land for a farm there. He added to
his original purchase until he had a farm of 640 acres. He also acquired
other property there, and though he continued to make his home at York,
it had been a custom to spend several months of each year looking after
his interests in the West.

He was married in Black River Falls to Maren Larson, who shared in his
endeavors and proved to be a worthy helpmate. She now survives him,
with one son, John, born to them. He also leaves two brothers,
Ole Heggen and Otto Heggen of Des Moines, Iowa and one sister,
Mrs. Ida Kalstad, of Albion. Six grandchildren and several great grand-
children also survive him, among whom he was held in the most
affectionate regard.

For forty years Mr. Heggen has been a participant in county affairs, and
he was widely and favorably known. He had been a member of the
Lutheran Church at Pigeon Falls fifty-three years.
