| Mrs. Marie L. Njos was born in Leikanger Sogen,
Norway on October 19, 1840. She came to the United States in 1867, coming first to Rice County, Minnesota, where she lived for two years. She moved to Kandiyohi County at that time and in 1869 was married to Lasse O. Njos by Rev. Lars Markhus. Mr. and Mrs. Njos were the first couple to be married by Rev. Markhus in that congregation. The union was blessed with eight children, six of whom survive. They are: Olaus, John, Albert and Marie (Mrs. Joe Roisum), all of Sunburg, Minnesota; Severt of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Edward of Williston, North Dakota. Her husband preceded her in death in 1891 and a son, Andrew died in 1893, and a daughter, Christine, in 1927. Fifteen grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a brother, Johannes J. Henjum, the latter in Norway, as well as a host of other relatives and many friends mourn her passing. For the past 70 years Mrs. Njos had resided on the old homestead in Arctander Township. At the time of her death she was living with her sons, Albert and John. She had been an active member of the West Norway lake church and its Ladies' Aid. Despite her advanced age, she was very active up until June 10, 1938 at which time she suffered a stroke. From this and infirmities attendant upon old age she never recovered. At the time of her death on September 25 last she was 98 years, 11 months and 6 days of age. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 30m at the home at 1:30 and at the West Norway Lake Church at 2:30. Rev. Baalson officiated, assisted by Rev. Njus. The choir rendered two songs. There were many beautiful floral offerings and a large sum of money was given to missions in her memory. The flower bearers were Louise Heron, Mrs. F. Case, Mrs. Millard Lien and Adeline Njos. Honorary pallbearers were John N. Roisum, Andrew N. Henjum, Edward Hauge, Erick Roisum, Andrew L. Henjum and John H. Henjum. The active pallbearers were Edward Ramstad, Ingmar Gjerde, Christ Roisum, John J. Henjum, Jacob Foshager and Sam Thorsness. All of the children were present at the funeral. Other relatives and friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Heron and daughter Louise, Mrs. Kenneth Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Finn Case, Mr. and Mrs. John Belster, Mrs. John Pederson, Andrew and John Henjum, William and Edna Pederson, all of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John Roisum of Glenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Jens Roisum and family of Brooten; Mr. and Mrs. Christ Roisum of Murdock; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ellendson and John Stai and son of Benson; Mr. and Mrs. I. Gjerde of Atwater; Mrs. Pete Reistad of Kensington; Mrs. Wollen, Mr. Wick, Christ and Ferdinand Johnson all of Evansville; Mrs. F. Irgens of Farwell; Mrs. Lena Marshall, Mrs. Jennie Lindberg, Mrs. Harland Rykken, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Lien, all of Willmar; Mr. and Mrs. S. Johnson, Mrs. Harlow Johnson, O.G. Hough and Mrs. and Mrs. E. Ostby of Kerkhoven. A large number of relatives and friends from nearby communities also attended. Burial was in the West Norway Lake Cemetery. Mrs. Njos was possessed of a sunny disposition and she never complained through the many years of joy and sorrow.
